Canine Good Citizen Training and Evaluation

The AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test is a certification program by the American Kennel Club (AKC) designed to evaluate basic obedience and social skills in dogs. It promotes responsible pet ownership and good behavior in dogs. The test consists of 10 items, which the dog must pass to earn the CGC title. Here’s a summary of the requirements:

  1. Accepting a Friendly Stranger
The dog must remain calm while a friendly stranger approaches and speaks to the owner.

  2. Sitting Politely for Petting
The dog must allow a stranger to pet it while showing no signs of aggression or fear.

  3. Appearance and Grooming
The dog must allow basic handling for grooming, such as brushing or having its paws and ears checked.

  4. Out for a Walk (Loose Leash Walking)
The dog must demonstrate it can walk politely on a loose leash without pulling or lagging behind.

  5. Walking Through a Crowd
The dog must calmly navigate through a crowd, showing self-control and good behavior.

  6. Sit, Down, and Stay on Command
The dog must demonstrate it can sit, lie down, and stay in place when instructed.

  7. Coming When Called
The dog must come to the owner from a short distance when called.

  8. Reaction to Another Dog
The dog must behave politely when encountering another dog, showing no signs of aggression or excessive excitement.

  9. Reaction to Distractions
The dog must remain calm and confident when faced with everyday distractions, such as loud noises or moving objects.

  10. Supervised Separation
The dog must remain calm when left with a trusted person for three minutes while the owner is out of sight.

Passing the CGC test is a great way to showcase your dog’s good manners and helps prepare them for advanced training or therapy dog certification.
